Jan Zeman is a Professor at the Department of Mechanics, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, holding a part-time research position at the Department of Decision-Making Theory, Institute of Information Theory and Automation, Czech Academy of Sciences. He is involved in research and teaching activities related to mechanics and the mathematics of materials and structures. Jan’s research activities concentrate on the modeling of heterogeneous materials with random microstructure and variational methods for mechanics of discrete and continuous inelastic media.
Academic profile
Jan earned his Ph.D. degree at Czech Technical University in Prague in 2003 under the joint supervision of Michal Šejnoha and Miroslav Černý. The focus of his thesis, “Analysis of composite materials with random microstructure” was on modeling random heterogeneous materials with computational homogenization, using statistics-informed periodic unit cells, and with semi-analytical methods based on Hashin-Shtrikman variational principles.Jan became an Assistant Professor at CTU in 2006, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2009, and to Professor in 2018. From November 2005 to October 2006 he joined the Marc Geers’ group at the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he was investigating variationally-based damage theories for stochastic discrete structures. From January 2012 to September 2015, Jan held a part-time position as Senior Researcher at the IT4Innovation Centre, Technical University in Ostrava, in a group focused on Numerical Modelling for Engineering.
